MOURNING OF THE MARTIAN
In the recent universe-wide storyline at DC Comics, Final Crisis, the DC Universe lost a prominent and beloved character. A lynchpin, if you will, in one of the most recognizable teams in all of comics, the Justice League of America. To say the loss came as a shock and disappointment to fans across the globe would be a gross understatement. If you have not yet read Final Crisis, be prepared for an emotional roller coaster ride.
Of all DC Comic Characters, J’onn J’onz is, or was, one of the most unique. Coming from Mars possessing a number of powers ranging from telepathy to shapeshifting, Jonz, or more commonly, the Martian Manhunter, was the definition of a hero. But his powers were not the only attributing factor to his heroism and uniqueness. Rather, Martian Manhunter was much more than his superhero identity insinuates. He was also a kind, fair, wise and ever-learning being who became one of the most respected and revered heroes in all of the DC Universe.
When J’onz came to earth, he had escaped a mental plague that claimed the lives of all other Martians as far as he knew. Abandoned and alone, this mysterious stranger would set out to forge a new identity on earth. Becoming one of the founding members of the Justice League, Manhunter would gain notoriety as the conscious of the powerful organization, becoming a leader, guiding the others in their various pursuits. But he still always felt a little out of left field, like a lost ball in high weeds because of his origins.
In recent years, Manhunter has undergone quite the identity crisis (no pun intended). After learning of Ted Kord’s (Blue Beetle) death, he went undercover trying to take the organization responsible for his friend’s death, Checkmate, down. He also discovered he wasn’t alone and there actually were other Martians on earth. And through all this he was forced to question his own identity and purpose on earth.
After coming through all of that, Manhunter is captured and imprisoned by Lex Luthor, then left for dead, only to be rescued by Libra, who then seemingly kills the stalwart hero.
Whether this is the absolute final fate for J’onn J’onz or not remains to be seen. But for now, an entire universe and its fans join in mourning the loss of one of the greats, the Martian Manhunter.
