The Very First Video Game Ever Released (and It’s not Pong)

When asked about the very first video game ever released most experts will tell you that it was Pong, the famous table tennis inspired video game released in 1972 by Atari Inc. But Pong wasn’t the first one, as a company called Nutting Associates had already released their Computer Space game in 1971.

Computer Space was created by Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabne, who later founded Atari. The gaming idea was based on Spacewar! (see below), but the really revolutionary concept was to create a machine specifically for a game (instead of programming a game for an existing hardware). The classic arcade game had been invented.

The game was quite simple, you had to control a space ship and would fire missiles at flying saucers. Computer Space’s technology was very primitive – no microprocessor and no modern memory architecture, the entire minimalistic computer was made of only 74 logic circuits using diode arrays as memory. But it came in an outstanding futuristic cabinet, which was available in various colors.

While the Computer Space game was quite successful on college campuses, it didn’t perform well in bars. It was probably too complicated back then, as people had never seen such a kind of game before. Pong, which was a huge success only shortly after, was much more easy to play and to understand.

While Computer Space was the first computer game available for the public, the were games even before it. Bill Pitts and Hugh Tuck had programmed Galaxy Game two months before Computer Space was released (in September 1971), but it was only available at Stanford University. Galaxy Game, again, was based on Spacewar!, a game created on a PDP-1 back in 1961 by Steve “Slug” Russell, Martin “Shag” Graetz and Wayne Wiitanen.

Movie Man: ‘Caddyshack’ is very funny — not very good

Movie Man: ‘Caddyshack’ is very funny — not very good
“Caddyshack” and “National Lampoon’s Animal House” are forever linked in the pantheon of movie comedies, and for good reason.

Why are extra-terrestrials depicted as looking very different from modern humans?

my theories are:

the primary elements that they evolved from differ from ours (carbon-based).

this could also apply to differing temperatures on their home planet.

or

their planet came into existence a few billion years before ours, giving them much more time to evolve, as well as develop the ability for space travel.

Antique World Maps are Very Popular Among Collectors

Drawing representations of the Earthâ??s surface goes back as far as centuries B.C.  Some of the earliest discovered â??mapsâ? date back to the ancient Babylonians and indigenous peoples.  Of course we all know that the ancient Egyptians used to draw their maps with hieroglyphics.  It was the ancient Greeks, however, who really began drawing detailed maps.  It was Ptolemyâ??s historic map of the world that made its mark on the world. Ever since then, human kind has been studying the details of the world and drawing them.

Some of these antique world maps are still around today, and are being collected by history buffs all around the world.  All though itâ??s possible to collect historic maps representing every country and land thatâ??s ever existed, itsâ?? the antique world maps that offer the most appeal.  Size does matter with antique world maps â?? it appears that the larger, the better.  The greater sized world maps show the most detail.  The more rare and large an antique world map is, the higher its worth.

Replicas can also be made of historic maps to make them more easily affordable.  Although theyâ??re not the real thing, well made copies can still have a â??vintageâ? feel to them.  Many people enjoy looking at historic maps for genealogic purposes.  They are curious about what the world looked like to their ancestors over the centuries.

There are others who like looking at ancient maps that contain images of â??UFOâ??sâ? or â??mythical creaturesâ?.  Itâ??s interesting to see that the ancients had imaginations just like we do.  Or perhaps they truly DID see the strange things they were drawing, but we only interpret them wrong.  Regardless, there have been many unidentifiable things drawn by the ancients on historic maps.  The point is, there are many reasons why people find looking at historic maps interesting.  While some people are only somewhat curious, there are others who truly love collecting history by buying antique world maps.
